Christmas in Germany and Czech Part 3 - Wittenberg and Dresden, Germany

After leaving Berlin on Sunday, we traveled south to Wittenberg, the hometown of Martin Luther. We went to the Lutherhaus, a Reformation museum in what was initially a monastery and later because Luther's home. The museum holds a large collection of the German Reformation manuscripts and artifacts.

The Augustinian monastery of Wittenberg, which later became the family home of Martin Luther and the current home of the Lutherhaus museum.

A painting depicting Luther nailing his 95 theses to the Castle Church door.

Sculpture in the courtyard of the Lutherhaus museum.

A picture of Kevin and Piper in front of the Lutherhaus that I thought was cute.

After the Lutherhaus, we went into Wittenberg to the All Saints' Church, or the Castle Church in Wittenberg, the place where Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the door on October 31, 1517. This was considered the start of the Protestant Reformation.

This is the doorway, the wooden doors were replaced with these bronze doors with the 95 theses engraved on them in 1858.

After Wittenberg, we continued south and stopped in Dresden, Germany on our way to the Czech Republic.

This is the Dresdner Frauenkirche, or the Church of Our Lady in Dresden. It sustained heavy damage during the bombings of WWII, and was recently restored as a symbol of reconciliation and peace. The reconstruction began in 1994 and was finished in 2005.

View of the altstadt or old town in the heart of Dresden, the church is the Katholische Hofkirche, or the Catholic Church of the Royal Court of Saxony.

Beautiful night view of Dresden along the River Elbe.
We were a little sad to only have one evening in Dresden, it was a beautiful city that has been restored after having 90% of the city center destroyed during WWII.

Sunday night we made it to Prague, Czech Republic, which will be Part 4!
