Weekend in Barcelona

The first weekend in Aug, we went to Barcelona for a weekend getaway. It was a lovely weekend and we really loved Barcelona. We spent the first day in the city seeing the sights.

In front of the Christopher Columbus monument at the end (beginning?) of La Rambla.

walking to the cathedral..

Side view of the Barcelona Cathedral.

Piper taking a break.

The Barcelona Cathedral - Cathedral of Santa Eulalia.

Inside the cathedral.

Choir stalls, displaying the coats-of-arms of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece, founded by Duke Phillip III of Burgundy (and yes, I looked that up and didn't just remember it!).

the cloister

Walking up La Rambla, the famous pedestrian street in Barcelona.

A live statue on the La Rambla. And one of the best we've seen throughout Europe.

Barcelona's Arc de Triomf.

Gaudi's masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, a privately funded Catholic Church in Barcelona. It has been under construction since 1882 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. This side is known as the Nativity façade.
This is the Passion façade.

Another Gaudi building in Barcelona. We didn't have time to see the Park Güell where more of Gaudi's work is displayed.

The Palau Nacional, built for the 1929 World Fair and rehabilitated for the 1992 Summer Olympics. It houses the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

In the evening, we headed for the Poble Espanyol. It is a group of buildings built in 1929 for the International Exhibition in Barcelona on the Montjuic hill to give a representation of the different architecture throughout Spain. We were headed for the Tablao de Carmen, where we saw a flamenco (traditional Spanish dance) show with dinner.
There are lots of little shops with traditional artisans making their wares. Here the boys are watching a man make glass jewelry.
Taking a break.

Kev and boys.

happy Piper...

with really dirty feet!

I decided to make the flamenco show it's own post, and hopefully will be able to add a couple videos. It was truly the highlight of Barcelona, followed by the magic fountain at night.
