I'm on this black and white kick...

The Dome of St. Peter's.

Closer view. The dome was designed by Michelangelo, but completed almost 30 years after his death.

View from the top of the Dome, some 323 winding, claustrophobic steps from the rooftop.

Outside view of the Dome from the rooftop.
After we walked down we headed over to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel.

Wolf guarding the entry to the hall of animals. The boys liked the animals, the guards did not like the boys touching the animals. We hurried on through.

'Triumph of Christian Religion' painted by Sicilian painter Tommaso Laureti.
After walking through 4 miles of art and history, we were ready for some down time.
We walked to this bridge over the Tiber River with a beautiful view of the Castel Sant'Angelo (below).
And the paparazzi continued to snap more cute boy pictures.

I know, but it was 'one of the world's biggest and most lavish McDonald's', so what could we do?? After a few energy milkshakes, we walked up the Spanish Steps to the Villa Borghese, Rome's sprawling central park.

Beautiful lake in the park with Ionic temple on the island. This would be a very romantic little place to take a rowboat ride. Maybe next time....
Later that evening, we took a bus to go to dinner. This is about 10 seconds before Piper puked all over the back of Kevin. They had to shut down the bus and unload everyone. Yep, we left our mark. Needless to say we found some carry out that night and headed back to the apartment.

This is the ground floor, a 12th century Roman Catholic church.

This is below the present-day church, a 4th century church buried until the 19th century.

And below that are ancient Roman buildings, dating to around the 2nd century or earlier.

These guys like having their picture taken. Really, they wouldn't stop posing with their guns.
We were planning on going out to the catacombs yet, but the bus and metro transport workers were on stike all day. So we packed up and hit the road. We stopped in Pisa, because it was pretty much on the way home. And we just couldn't pass up the opportunity to see the Leaning Tower.
More black and white, I just can't help it. Don't you agree it just makes the portraits?
We finished the day off with some yummy gelatos and Roman pizza. In that order, because why not, it's vacation.
The following day, Sunday, we started at the Baths of Diocletian in the Piazza Repubblica.

Doors outside the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which is housed in the former hall of the baths of Rome.

I think Kev's going to bring one home so we can do the bike trip to MW Camp as a family.

I took some video of us zooming through the park on that bike, I'll try and post a little clip sometime. We had lunch in the park, then went back to our apartment so Piper and Daddy could have their Sunday afternoon naps.

On Monday morning, we checked out the San Clemente Basilica. It is an archeological gem.

Riding that thing all the way to MWC? Hah!
Wow! That was quite a trip, thanks for sharing. The bike looked fun although not quite big enough for us. I bet the children would have a blast on it though. I agree with you, the black and white pictures are great.
