Milano and Alba, Italy

On Sunday, August 2nd, my brother Albert flew back to the US. So we set off to check out Milan. We started at the Castello Sforzesco, a castle in Milan that used to house the ruling family but now is the home of several museums.

This gives you an idea how huge this tower is... check out CJ attempting to scale the walls.

Every fountain is a huge temptation for the boys. They just have to touch it, which usually requires 1/2 way climbing in :)

The Torre del Filarete.

Next, we headed to the center of Milan to the Piazza Duomo to see the cathedral and mall of Milan.

In front of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan's glass covered mall.

Inside...

the beautiful floor...

and what would a really fancy mall be without a McD's?

Next to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the Duomo di Milano, or Milan Cathedral.

The Milan Cathedral took five centuries to complete and is the 4th largest Cathedral in the world.

It was Sunday so we went in during mass, and it was amazing to hear the organ fill the large cathedral. They just don't build the churches or organs like than anymore :)

Our boys' favorite thing to do, if we must tour through the cities and be really quiet in the churches, is to climb up the towers. It doesn't matter if they're too tired to walk around the city anymore, they see tower steps and the race is on! This time the steps took us to the roof top of the cathedral and we were able to walk around and enjoy the architecture of the spires as well as the views from the cathedral roof.

The famous "Madonnina" atop the main spire of the cathedral. They're still renovating the main spire.

Piper on the roof. It was really, really sunny up there!

View down into the Duomo Piazza, with gargoyles on every spire.

After touring around Milan all morning and afternoon, we headed home. We decided to take a little detour and hit some of the little villages in the wine country near Torino. We stopped in Asti and Alba.
This is the Duomo in Alba, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.

After that we headed home over the mountains. Here's the closest thing to a sunset in the mountains:

Love color of the sun reflecting in the clouds...
always in awe of the beauty of this world!
