La Dent de Crolles

On the 3rd of October, we hiked up the Dent de Crolles! We've been wanting to do this for some time, but since it's over 2000m and a little steep in places, we decided we better not take CJ and Piper. So we got a babysitter and took our oldest and set off.

View of the Dent de Crolles from part way up.

Picture at the Col de Ayes, where we hiked at the end of August.

In August, we turned and went up Mount Pravouta, which you can see behind Kevin in this picture. This time we kept going straight up the Dent de Crolles.

We went with some friends, Ian and Stacey. They are fellow Americans who attend our church. They are young and bike everywhere and they are in much better shape than us ;)

Still heading up...

Watching the paraponters take off below us! Also enjoying the view of how far we've come - we started down at the road below near the Col du Coq.

Almost there - this was about the steepest section of the way up along the side trail we took.

Some interesting rock formations.

At the top!!

Looking down into the valley below. It was quite hazy, but Grenoble is off to the right.

Enjoying the view...

Family shot at the top.

Too bad it was so hazy - that's Mount Blanc in the distance, but it was hard to see.

Another view towards Grenoble.

Heading back down. We decided to go down a different trail that winds more around the back side of the Dent de Crolles.

There were some much steeper areas with cables to assist in getting up/down. Hang on, E!

And some narrow crevices...

with boulders suspended above.

The Dent de Crolles is known for it's many caves. This was one we saw on the way down.

Looking out of the cave entrance.

Beautiful views of the Chartreuse mountains.

Final shot of the Dent de Crolles. It was a good hike and a great day. The weather was perfect, the company fantastic - thanks, Ian and Stacey! It was a good hike, about as much as we'd want to do as a family with kids. Maybe next year we'll take CJ and Piper up :)
