So after a fun family day of skiing, we headed out on Sunday for a trip to Eastern Europe. Kevin had wanted to see Budapest for some time, and we also wanted to get out to Slovakia and see our friends, Ed and Wendi, who are living there as missionaries for Josiah Venture. We decided the first stop would be Salzburg, because we loved it so much 2 years before at Christmas. It did not disappoint. We even went to a few new places this time (that I had been to with my Mom and brother last spring).
First of all, we checked out the cathedral downtown.

I always love the doors to the cathedrals. This one was not so much old as interesting.

E is a superb chess player these days (can easily beat me and often beat Kevin), so we walked over to see the giant chess area, but unfortunately they were locked up and no one was playing.

Before going up the castle, we decided to walk up to see the Nonnberg Nunnery. This was where the 'real' Fraulein Maria was a nun. They also filmed a few scenes for the Sound of Music movie here.

This was the gate they used when they came to the nunnery looking for the family.

Then we decided to walk up to the castle since the furnicular is so expensive.

It was a steep walk, but warmed us up!

The boys loved these icicles on the side of the mtn.

Kevin had to find the biggest one :)

Back down along the river for one last view of the Hohensalzburg Castle.
We were really cold walking around the city, so we hopped in the car and headed out to the Hellbrunn Castle. In the summer there are some fun trick fountains behind where the boys are standing.

Love it! Brings back memories.
I am living out old memories through your blog and Phil Shafer's adventures through Europe. So glad that others are now finding opportunity to explore some of the same paths we traveled :)
See you soon,
Vera
