Grenoble and Avignon, France

Thursday we were able to spend the afternoon touring around Grenoble and taking in some local sights.

the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Grenoble

view along the Isère River

Another view with the téléphérique, a system of egg-shaped cable cars known as "Les Bulles" or the Bubbles in the background. We rode on the Bubbles up to the Bastille, an ancient series of fortifications that overlook the city of Grenoble and surrounding areas.

It was a nice day, only slightly hazy - we could see Mount Blanc in the distance, the highest mountain in the alps and western Europe.
Beth and I and the view of Grenoble with the Belledonne mountains behind. Grenoble is known as the French capital of the alps, and the view from the Bastille is amazing!

Eglise Saint André. This lovely 12th century Romanesque church stands in the heart of Grenoble's old town.

On Friday we were able to leave for our weekend early since Kevin was again working from home due to demonstrations at the Cat Grenoble plant.
We decided to stop in Avignon and see the Palais des Papes, or the Palace of the Popes on our way to Aix-en-Provence. Avignon was the residence of the seven different Popes from 1309 to 1377.

Palais des Papes.

Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral, next to the Palace.

View over the Rhône River from the Palace.

The remains of the Saint Bénézet Bridge over the Rhône River.

Statue on top of the Notre Dame des Doms.

Final view of the Palais des Papes.

I thought this was a great double decker carousel, I'll have to bring the boys back to Avignon to ride it ;)
More adventures of Beth and Kristy coming up!
