Switzerland Day 3 - Trachselwald Castle and Schilthorn

The following day, we made our way in the morning to the Trachselwald Castle in the Emmental region of Switzerland.  This castle was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and contains a lot of the history of the Anabaptists and also was a part of the Swiss Peasants' War, including the execution of the peasants' leader in September of 1653.  We did a one hour guided tour by a historian who told us about the part the castle played in detaining the Anabaptists, who were held here because of their faith.

View of the castle as we drove up.
 Going into the castle.
The tower, where the prisoners were held.
Our tour guide demonstrating how the prisoners were kept chained in a sitting position.
View of the region below from the castle tower.
It was interesting to hear a bit of the Anabaptist history and be in a place where they were held for their faith.  I'm thankful for our faith heritage and for our ancestors who lived through this time and suffered for their faith.
After touring the castle, we headed south to the Interlaken area of Switzerland.  We found this covered bridge along our way.
Boys throwing rocks into the river...
 And drove along Lake Thun...
Down to Interlaken.  Then we drove south to the town of Murren to go up the Schilthorn cablecar to the summit.  Amazing views of the mountains and waterfalls.
We took the cable car up to the summit of Schilthorn, at 2970m.
From the summit, you can see beautiful views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains as well as more than 200 other summits.
It was a bit colder than we were dressed for up there!  Note the boys' sandals and Kevin's lack of jacket!
 The views were amazing!
This is from inside the restaurant Piz Gloria, which is at the summit.  It rotates around and was used in one of the James Bond movies, hence the 007 markings on the windows.
One final picture before we descended.
Grandma and Grandpa enjoying the ride down.
 View from the cable car.
We stopped mid way down and walked around in the town of Gimmelwald, which is at 1367m, so not quite so cold!  This was a Switzerland cheese map that I loved!
 In Gimmelwald.
The cog train tracks.  We took the cable car to the summit, I'm not sure where the cog train takes you.
View of the alps from Gimmelwald.
A fun slide the boys played on while we explored the town a little.
And then, the descent down into Murren.
A few final view of Lake Thun on our way back to our wonderful B&B.
More stories and pictures to come!
