A Little Sightseeing in Salzburg Along the Way

We stopped in Salzburg, Austria on our trip down memory lane for a couple days of sightseeing. David and Sandy were staying with her Mom's cousin, who lives downtown and gave us a great tour!

David and Sandy in Mirabell Gardens.

Mom in front of the famous fountain in the Mirabell Gardens. Sandy and I skipped around the perimeter singing 'Do-Re-Mi', but unfortunately David hasn't sent me the video yet to include here. I'm kidding! Not about the skipping and singing part, but about posting said video, which hopefully doesn't exist.

Mom, Sandy, Misa (Sandy's Mom's cousin) and David at the steps of the Mirabell Gardens, with the Hohensalzburg Fortress behind.

More pics, same location...

Then we walked down along the river on a trail that Misa bikes every morning. What a view!

This is a hotel in the old town where apparently all the rich and famous stay.

Then we went to the Salzburg Cathedral.

Entrance of the cathedral.

Inside the cathedral.

The amazing ceiling.

Next, we went up the cable car to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This is the view of Salzburg from the castle walls.

View of the other side of the fortress.

Church in the fortress.

Then we went back down to the city for more walking...
Mozart's birthplace...

and statue.

We also decided to walk up to see the Nonnberg Abbey, in several scenes of the Sound of Music as well. It was a lot of walking for Mom and these steps were hard for her, but she made it!

By the gate of the Nonnberg Abbey.

Inside the abbey. The wedding in the movie was filmed elsewhere, but this is the actual abbey where the Maria served and the von Trapp's were married.

We also drove out to the Schloss Hellbrunn to see the crazy water works in the gardens. They have the gazebo from the Sound of Music movie there now. It used to be out at the Schloss Leopoldskron where they filmed the back of the house and the lake scenes, but moved it here to keep people from entering and damaging it.

More gardens...

The Schloss Hellbrunn.

This garden area is know as the wasserspiele, or water park. It is a garden full of trick fountains built by Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. When he built the castle, he designed these gardens to play practical jokes on his guests.

After dinner, he would soak his guests at this table.

There were other trick fountains throughout the park. I may or may not have gotten sprayed by one of them.

The following day, we decided to drive out to see the Schloss Leopoldskron, where they filmed some of the outdoor scenes on the back of the house and in the lake. This is the view from across the lake.

And here we are trespassing - I mean, visiting, the house itself. You aren't really supposed to enter the grounds and take pictures... but since we stayed there in Christmas 2008 I knew my way around, so I took (sneaked) us onto the grounds for a couple of pictures.

And a final picture of me at the lake.

The rest of the trip down memory lane coming...
