Beautiful Corsica Interior

Our villa in Corsica was near Sagone, about 45 minutes north of Ajaccio, on the central western coast. The first whole day we were there, Sunday, was cold and partly cloudy, so we decided to drive to the Cascades d'Aitone and do some hiking.

The boys were exhausted and fell asleep quickly...

On the interior roads the cattle

and pigs roam freely.

You have to nudge them out of your way to get through.

After about an hour of some crazy roads strewn with cows and pigs and switchbacks, we found the path to the waterfalls. It was a gorgeous path through the woods.

The cascade ended up being not one large waterfall but rather lots of small waterfalls that fed into small pools. It was beautiful and the boys loved climbing all over the rocks.

Looking down over the main cascades (see picture above to feel at ease with our boys sitting on the edge like this!)

After a few hours at the cascades, we continued our drive along the Gorges de Spelunca to Porto. There were villages nestled into the mountains...

and breathtaking views down to the sea.
More rugged mountains..
and quaint villages on the slopes.

Looking down into the beaches near Porto.

More gorgeous views near Piana...

and amazing red rock formations.

We truly were amazed at the beauty and unique landscape of Corsica.

The roads were quite crazy as well. We stopped in a village to look around and the first thing Piper said was "I'm going to puke!". We grabbed him out of the van and he proceeded to puke in the parking lot. Whew, close call. What a champ to tell us in time to get him out! We do mountain roads all the time living where we do, but I would have to say that the Corsica roads take the cake on switchbacks and tight turns. I'm thankful we were there in June and not in the high season months of July or August when the roads are full!

Beach pictures to come...
